To find out, we surveyed 300 people in our community, including customers of Launching.io, LinkedIn followers and newsletter readers. The responses came from a mix of marketers, founders and growth-focused operators working at early- and mid-stage startups.

We asked 10 core questions covering testing frequency, strategic approach, performance metrics, psychological triggers, tooling and common challenges. Some responses confirmed what we expected. Others revealed patterns and gaps that are often overlooked.

However, when we asked how often they test, only 51 respondents said they run tests weekly. The most common cadence was monthly (112 respondents), followed by quarterly (62 respondents). 24 respondents said they rarely or never test at all. This suggests that testing is often reactive rather than systematic.

When it comes to what teams are testing, they focus mostly on copy and interface elements that are quick to change and easy to measure. The top responses were:

CTA buttons and headlines are common targets because they are visible, central to the user journey and tied directly to conversion behavior. Form fields are tested to reduce friction or improve submission rates. Social proof ranked lowest among the four, even though it plays the strongest role in building trust. Other elements like product descriptions, trust badges or layout changes did not show up in top responses, suggesting these areas are often overlooked.

Many teams are testing, but not all are doing it strategically. Without a clear hypothesis or plan, experiments are more likely to produce misleading results and waste time.

In our survey, 142 respondents said they run A/B tests based on specific hypotheses. However, 78 respondents admitted to using random experimentation, and 24 said they were not sure.

For example, a founder of a B2B SaaS product reduced the number of form fields on their signup page from six to three, keeping only name, email and phone number. After the change, their form completion rate nearly doubled. On the backend, the small sales team found the respondents’ titles on LinkedIn to tailor their approach. Everything else on the landing page stayed the same, but the reduced friction helped more users follow through.

Urgency works well when it feels real, not forced. Examples include limited spots for a webinar or a trial window that genuinely closes on a specific date.

  • A new headline might not increase conversions directly but could improve CTR to the form
  • A shorter form might not lift total conversions right away but could improve completion rate and lower bounce

Choosing the right KPI depends on the goal of the test. If the goal is to improve engagement, CTR may be the better metric. If the goal is to reduce drop-off, form completion rate should be tracked. Focusing only on conversion rate can cause teams to miss early signs of friction or opportunity.

A Confidence Gap Exists

Many teams are eager to run A/B tests, but fewer feel confident interpreting the results. This gap can limit the value of experimentation and lead to missed opportunities or false conclusions.
